It's not too early to start thinking about how to win the day everyday with summer learning. Check out the Win the Day summer learning webpage for information on our Bulldog Mobile stops, open AR testing times at BMS, community reading programs, and much more. Each week the Next Level blog will offer learning challenges including web tools, arts & crafts, and virtual field trips. Read! Learn! Create!
Public and school libraries all over the country are creating makerspaces, and BMS library is excited about Makerspace May. This month students are learning some new skills to take home for summer: weaving plastic cord lanyards, making Rainbow Loom bracelets, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, braiding and beading, sewing, folding origami, learning new games, and more. Yep. The library is a busy, busy place! (Sshh. Don't tell the kids, but following diagrams to learn to use the loom, reading patterns and directions, and following video tutorials are opportunities to practice literacy skills!) Learning is fun!
Community support for our makerspace has been awesome. We've gotten yarn, supplies, and even a sewing machine donated. Our current needs include embroidery hoops, more bands for the Rainbow Loom, and more plastic cording...so, if you have any sitting unused, the library will gladly help you free up some storage space by taking those supplies off your hands. Eighteen middle school students met in the BMS library lab after school on Tuesday to learn some basic computer coding. First, they explored Code Maven by Crunchzilla where they followed a step-by-step tutorial to explore Javascript. Then they launched Scratch by MIT, where they moved blocks of HTML code to animate figures. Two 8th grade students and one BHS sophomore guided the students who ran into roadblocks, and Mrs. Groff is especially grateful for their willingness to help! Ms. Bagwell joined the fun and learned right along with the kids. The students had so much fun that the coding class will continue after school every Tuesday in May. Students can sign up in the library. Limit 30 students each week.
The 8th grade visited Schreiner University Tuesday morning for a college experience. In addition to touring the campus, the students learned about the programs that the university offers, heard about opportunities for getting involved in campus life, and participated in a campus trivia quiz to earn some cool new college t-shirts and other prizes. After a quick trip back to BMS for lunch, the students loaded the buses for an orientation at Bandera High School. The next five weeks are going to fly for the 8th graders. They're high school bound!
