Nurse Serene and her two sisters accompanied their father, Houston Edward Lowe, age 95, USAF Retired (31 years active duty) (WWII veteran, former POW of the Japanese for 42 months during WWII) on an "Honor Flight" with the Honor Flight de Valero of San Antonio. This was a trip to Washington D.C. primarily to allow the 15 WWII and 1 Korean War veteran to visit the WWII and Korean War Monuments. During this trip participants were able to view a changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and to visit the WWII Memorial. At the WWII Memorial, the veterans were honored with a Color Guard from the "Old Guard" of the Military District of Washington. They also visited the Marine Corps Iwo Jima, Vietnam War, Korean War, Lincoln, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division Memorials, the Navy Museum and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The honor to the veterans continued when they arrived back at San Antonio International Airport and walked through a throng of 300 folks waving flags and waiting just to greet and thank them for their service. Members of all branches of the military were there to shake the hands of all the returning veterans. There were ladies present who had made quilts for each of the veterans. The only Marine veteran on the trip is the grandfather of former BMS student, Marshall Patton. Marshall gave a welcome speech for his grandfather. What a memorable trip for all involved. The culmination of the BMS Library Teen Read Week celebration was a putt putt golf game in the library for the 8th grade. Students in Mrs. Elrod's and Ms. Kepp's classes used recycled materials and tons of creativity to contribute to the course. A great big thank you to Kelly Orion of the Mayan Ranch for lending three pre-made golf holes. The BMS Library is looking forward to course expansion and more fun for Teen Read Week 2016! Recipe: Start with five Macs loaded with PhotoBooth, add three selfie sticks and some Bandera High School NHS students dressed as book characters, and throw in a bunch of middle school students. Watch the fun as they select their favorite books to showcase to their peers. Who knew that promoting literacy could be so much fun...and LOUD?
