Students from Ms. Kepp's 2nd period art class took a different approach to pumpkin decorating. The students chose their motivation from different pictures they were shown and went to work. Beautiful masterpieces!
Over forty BMS students gathered to organize our chess club. After establishing a schedule for play and tournaments, the students sorted chess pieces so that all equipment is ready to go the week of November 11. Sixth graders will meet on Mondays during advisory; seventh and eighth graders will meet on Tuesdays during advisory. All meetings will be in the Book Nook. Tournaments will be scheduled for the second semester.
The BMS Environmental Science classes are working in the field collecting samples of river water. The net will capture protozoans to be identified in the classroom.
Today was a big day at BMS! Our 3D printer made its first print, and we are super excited. A seventh grader's first question: "Can I print a model of DNA with that? I want to create the individual parts and have them snap together." How cool is that? A couple of 8th grade students spent part of their lunch in the library lab learning to use Google SketchUp so they can create their own 3D designs. One of the students, realizing that the size of the print bed impacted the size of his design, quickly found the measuring tape in SketchUp to make sure that his specs were indeed printable. Talk about real-world application of math skills! We can't wait to see what our students design. A great big thank you to Mr. Ceyl McDonald for assembling our printer, making our first print, and talking "3D" to students and teachers alike! Builder's Club, a student-led community service organization associated with the Kiwanis, aims to build leaders. The BMS chapter met today to plan our first community service project of the year: helping place American flags on U.S. veteran's graves at Bandera Cemetary in preparation for Veterans' Day. Members will also be busy this month designing t-shirts and completing officer applications so that officers can be elected and t-shirts chosen at our next meeting on December 2. BMS extends a great big thank you to Kiwanis member Greg Parker for helping with our meeting. If you are interested in coding, need time to create a design in Google SketchUp or want to do some video editing on Pinnacle or iMovie, BMS Tech Time is for you!
Starting Thursday, November 13, the BMS Library Lab will be open from 3:30-5:00 p.m. for Tech Time every Thursday. Each week a new tech tool will be highlighted and then the rest of the time, students and teachers can work on individual technology projects in a collaborative environment. Bus passes will be available, and the Activity Bus will stop at Boys and Girls Club when it leaves BMS. Christmas came a little early to the BMS Library on Friday with the delivery of a mysterious brown box. And in that mysterious brown box....a brand new, unassembled 3D printer! Mr. McDonald thought it was a little like Christmas morning, too. Unassembled, you say? Cool!!!! And so the assembly process begins.... Stay tuned for how we'll be using our 3D printer at BMS. (Hint: Ms. Bagwell has been brainstorming....) We can't wait!
Plan to shop our Scholastic Book Fair in the Book Nook starting November 3, 2014. Book Fair will be open first period to 4:00 Mon-Thurs and first period through lunch on Friday. You can shop online at BMSBookFair from 10/29-11/18.
Mr. Tosh and Mr. Heiner were lured to a surprise celebration this morning to honor them on Boss's Day. They weren't quite sure what to think when they walked into a darkened classroom only to find it filled with students, teachers, and fun decorations. They were treated to a cheer, breakfast, and other goodies. Thanks, Mr. Tosh and Mr. Heiner, for all you do.
Over thirty BMS students met in the library during advisory on Wednesday to Skype author Nancy J. Cavanaugh. The students prepared posters and questions for the visit. Mrs. Cavanaugh shared her writing process, how she developed the characters, and what she hopes readers take away from her book, Always, Abigail. The readers were so inspired by the novel that they are planning to read to elementary school students in November and get together later this fall to make journals. The students can't wait for Mrs. Cavanaugh's other novel, This Journal Belongs to Ratchet, to arrive in next month's book order.
