Go on a virtual field trip to historic Philadelphia, make fireworks at home with paint, and discover science at Start With a Book. Check out this week's learning challenges on the Next Level blog. |
School's only been out a few weeks, but BMS faculty and staff are already planning ahead for an awesome 2014-2015 school year. One of the fun things we like to do is to look back on the school year that just ended and remember all the fun and the learning. Here's a little slice of life from the library in 2013-2014. Summer may have started today, but that doesn't mean learning is taking a break. You can keep learning all summer long! Check out the Win the Day summer learning page for information about open AR times at BMS, places and times for Bulldog Mobile stops, dates/times for summer reading programs at the community libraries, a Symbaloo full of educational sites to visit this summer, and a link that will tell you how to earn free books from Barnes and Noble. Then hop over to the Next Level summer challenges for links to virtual field trips, arts and crafts projects, photography challenges and more. If you've lost your summer reading assignment, you can retrieve another copy on the Win the Day page, as well. Happy learning.
Good luck to our eighth graders as they move on to BHS in August. They had a great end-of-year celebration. Ms. Bagwell and the 8th grade team were so proud of the students' exemplary behavior and participation in the activities. A big thank you to Mrs. Lonsberry and her yearbook staff for putting together a great slide show. And a super-dooper big thank you to the parents for their generous donations of time and food!
Sixth grade science students were asked to use their knowledge of acceleration, forces, and engineering during the last week of school. They were challenged to create a device that would would protect a raw egg from a two meter drop. Students initially were given two styrofoam cups and 18 inches of tape. Throughout the week they were allowed to test (with hard boiled eggs) and modify their device with one additional item each day. By the end of the week we had ten eggs that survived the two meter drop, so what did we do? We moved up to three meters. From three meters, we still had six eggs survive. Science is fun! Mrs. Bagwell, organizer extraordinaire, and our 8th grade teachers have put together an amazing day for our 8th grade students. No student will want to miss out! Thursday is going to be memorable. Don't forget the sunscreen.
Seventh grade students in Mrs. Derry's and Ms. Allison's math classes saw first hand last week how math really is important in the real world! Two DPS troopers shared a presentation with the students explaining how they use math to analyze traffic accidents. Then the students got to experience first-hand measuring skid marks and making calculations to determine a vehicle's speed.
After weeks spent reading, analyzing and discussing literature about or connected to the Holocaust, 8th grade ELAR students in Ms. Bagwell's and Mrs. Lonsberry's classes created alternate endings to their novels along with artifacts representing those changes.
