Congratulations to all the teams for their commitment to reading, their dedication to achieving a long-term goal, and their willingness to work with others to accomplish a task.
The 2018 Battle of the Books kicked off Tuesday. Seven teams composed of three students each committed in October to read ten titles from the 2017 Lone Star Reading list. Round 1 of the competition was a 30 question Google Form quiz that team members completed individually. Two teams were eliminated. Round 2 Wednesday is a contest of speed and accuracy sorting quotes, characters, events, etc. from the ten books. Two more teams will be eliminated. Round 3 is a relay race that will take place during an advisory school assembly on Thursday. The winners of the Battle of the Books will earn a fun-filled full-day Staycation in the library in May. The runner-up team will earn a half-day Staycation.
Congratulations to all the teams for their commitment to reading, their dedication to achieving a long-term goal, and their willingness to work with others to accomplish a task. BMS readers received an awesome bonus at the spring Scholastic Book Fair. Students earned the equivalent of ten cents per AR point and redeemed those points for free books.
Mrs. Lonsberry's and Ms. Bagwell's 8th grade ELA classes participated in a museum experience in the BMS library. Thanks to a travelling trunk from Gettysburg National Park, the students were able to explore the life of a Civil War Soldier through clothing, past times, music, photographs, and the words of Civil War heroes.
A great big Bulldog thank you to Morgen Ayers of the Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District for another great Science in Action day. Students worked in collaborative teams to determine the best placement of a variety of materials to build an aquifer model that filtered dirty water after a rain event.
Driving a Sphero robot is good. Using blocks of code to program the robot to go where you want it to go is even better! This 7th grade student programmed his bot to jump a ramp, turn, and jump it again. To celebrate Teen Read Week, twenty-eight BMS students visited with Mr. Mark Alpert, author of a science fiction trilogy consisting of The Six, The Siege, and The Silence.
Mr. Alpert, a journalist and contributing editor at Scientific American, shared his process for moving his initial idea into three action-packed books involving six terminally ill teenagers who trade their bodies for machines to battle an artificial intelligence program. He encouraged students to read widely and to read a lot, to be persistent in pursuing their passions, and to be disciplined in their approach to attaining their goals. BMS sends a big Bulldog thank you to Mr. Alpert and his publisher, Sourcebooks, for the virtual visit. |
